6 and Under
6U is designed for players between the ages of 4 to 6 and provides girls with their first introduction to the game of softball. The focus on having fun, meeting friends old and new, and learning a bit about the game. At this age, girls are hitting light weight, “squishy” balls off the tee and learning the basics of fielding and throwing. We meet once a week for practice at our in-house dedicated softball field at the Unionville Recreation Association complex.
8 and Under
The 8U group is designed as a developmental league to delve deeper into the fundamentals of the game, lay the foundation of proper mechanics, improve the skills of our players, and foster a love for teammates and the game. Although we don’t keep score or standings in this division, we do track outs and play games against neighboring teams where the girls will get chances to hit live balls (combination of girl pitch and coach pitch) or off the tee, pitch to batters, field balls and run the bases, all while the coaches oversee and provide instruction within the field of play. We meet once a week for practice at our local Unionville softball fields and play games within the BVGSL area.
10 and Under
The game structure solidifies, the focus sharpens, and competition heats up in the 10U divison! We have accredited umpires to officiate games, keep score, track wins and league standings, and crown a season champion via playoffs. The tees are gone, girls pitch (except after ball 4 where the offensive coach will pitch to their player), stealing is permitted after the ball crosses homeplate, and the potential of strikeouts from a pitch from a distance of 35 feet are real in this league. Softball is an exciting and challenging sport, and we aim to ensure it is fun, teach the key fundamentals of the game, instill confidence in all our players, help them confront challenges, and deepen their love for the game, all in the context of friendly competition. We meet 1-2 times per week for practice at our local Unionville softball fields and play games within the BVGSL.
12 and Under
It is “game-on” for the players in this 12U league as the training wheels are fully removed. As with 10U, umpires officiate games, we keep score, track wins and league standings, and crown a season champion via playoffs. The girls pitch from a distance of 40 feet and there is no coach pitch. Stealing is permitted, dust flies as players slide under the tag, and making the 6-3 putout or occasional double-play is not uncommon at this level of play. The girls will gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of the game, refine their skills, gel as a true team, learn to overcome challenges, excel in a competitive environment, and forge friendships that will last them a lifetime. We meet 1-2 times per week for practice at our local Unionville softball fields and play games within the BVGSL area.
14/16 and under
It all comes together in the 14/16U league where players become masters of the game and directors of their destiny. The rules are generally aligned with high school softball rules. You will see pitches whizzing to the catcher in a blur from a distance of 43 feet and thunderous hits reaching the homerun fence. In this age bracket, girls will master the fundamentals of the game, perfect their skills, meet the challenges they face, and grow as players and friends. We meet 1-2 times per week for practice at our local Unionville softball fields and play games within the BVGSL area.
